Unit 3 - Edward Hooper

Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper was born in 1882 in Nyack in NYC. He worked as a printer, then he quit his job at 43 to be a painter. He studied commercial art in NYC. In 1923, he married Joe Nivision, she was his model. They lived in Greenwich village. Edward travelled to Europe in 1906 and a second time in 1909. There was no impact on his painting. He belonged to the Ashan school painters who painted normal objects and people. His teacher Rober Henri influenced him, he painted what he felt and saw. First, he had no money nor recognition but he became successful in 1924. He was very popular during the Great Depression because he represented people honestly: poor people with no homes or farms. He bought a car to travel across the USA. He died in 1967.
